Finding My Center

Finding My Center

“If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change.”
—Buddha

What's so special about a rose? Is it the softness of the petals, the scent, the shape? Or is it the fact that such a soft, delicate flower grows on a stem of thorns? For me, it's all of the above and more. I've always loved the spiral shape and enjoy finding the Golden Spiral out in the natural world. “Finding My Center” is named for the spiraling petals around the center of the rose, but also because photographing beautiful things and places helps me to center myself and feel a connection to nature. At times when I feel anxious or depressed, I try to get outdoors. Photographing and creating images is like meditation for me - it helps me to be present and mindful of my environment. I focus on the beauty around me and it soothes my soul. What helps you feel centered?

I captured this image at Shore Acres State Park near Coos Bay, OR. Besides the incredible rugged cliffs and wild Pacific Ocean vistas, this park is also home to formal gardens that were once part of a grand estate owned by timber baron Louis Simpson. This beauty was part of the All American Rose Selections. I was drawn to the gorgeous colors and delicate shapes of the center of this particular rose. The conditions were perfect for photographing flowers on this overcast day, with just enough light to create the glow in the petals.  I spent a lot of time in this beautiful garden - I had no problem finding my center here!
